ABOUT DUPEGUESSR

Every day at midnight UTC, DupeGuessr publishes a new challenge: three rounds, and in each round you see two images side by side. One is a genuine photograph taken by a human. The other is an AI recreation of that photograph — same scene, same framing, same subject, generated by an image model from nothing but a written description. Your job is to tap the dupe.

It is harder than it sounds, and that is the point. AI-generated imagery is flooding feeds, shops and news pages, and the models get better every month. The people who navigate that world well are the ones who have trained themselves to notice when texture, lighting or detail look subtly wrong. DupeGuessr is a daily repetition for that skill.

You play once per day — one attempt, three rounds — and afterwards you can compare your score against everyone else who played. Free play lets you replay random pairs from the archive as often as you like. No account, no login, no email required.

Each daily pair starts with a real photograph sourced randomly from Wikimedia Commons, the freely licensed media library. Hard filters discard anything below photographic quality, and a vision model then vetts every candidate: images containing people, unsafe content, or anything that is not a clear photograph are rejected.

The surviving photograph is described by a language model in an extremely detailed reconstruction specification — composition, lighting, colors, lens character, even its imperfections. A separate moderation pass checks that description. An image model then recreates the scene from the description alone, without ever seeing the original.

Finally, both images are normalized: identical pixel dimensions, stripped metadata, matched tone and color response. Nothing about the file names, sizes or embedded data reveals which image is which — the answer is graded on the server, and the reveal only happens after you pick.

All source photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and remain under their respective free licenses; the photographer and license of every image are credited on each day's results screen. The AI recreations are generated specifically for this game.
